Kishoravastha Shikshan Karyakram
Eklavya has been actively promoting and developing a school-based sexuality education programme through its Kishoravastha Shikshan Karyakram in Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh.
The major thrust of the programme was on training government schoolteachers to conduct workshops with school-going adolescent girls studying in Class VI to XII, trial sessions with school-going boys of Class VII to IX and summer camps and workshops for out-of-school girls.
The programme, which ran in 28 schools of Tonk Khurd block of Dewas district from 1997 to 2003, sought to educate adolescent schoolgirls on the changes taking place in their bodies and minds during puberty. It also focused on issues like pregnancy, malnutrition, childcare and gender relationships. A set of teaching modules on these different issues has been developed and field-tested.
The group is currently preparing a resource manual on adolescence education comprising a set of 11 field tested modules, with lesson plans on each topic for the facilitator-teacher, some reference material for the facilitator and some reading material for children.
The package covers issues that are of relevance and interest to adolescent girls, including growth and development, personal health concerns, healthy eating and nutrition, sexual and reproductive health, understanding the body etc.
