Hands-on Science Kit
The Science Kit
The Hoshangabad Science Teaching Programme (HSTP) developed a set of experiments which can easily be performed by every student in the state and which can help the child understand basic concepts of science. Most of these experiments can be performed with minimal and inexpensive equipment.
Based on this, a hands-on Science kit has been developed with a view to provide a facility to the children/schools in rural as well as urban areas to gain hands-on practical experience in sciences. The kit can be used by an individual child or a group of 5-6 children as well as a demonstration set by the teacher. It is not only a comprehensive compilation of instruments, equipment, chemicals and miscellaneous items which are generally required for carrying out experiments by students in Physics, Biology and Chemistry but also includes items that would cater to their strong need to satisfy their curiosity and tinker with things around them.
Even though there are plenty of activities and project books in the market, we do not have materials that systematically develop understanding of basic concepts and themes. Class room practices to give little space for activities or open-ended discussion or children’s experiences of daily life. This is one major reason why even science graduates fail to relate their learning to day-to-day experiences and continue to harbor Aristotelian notions.
It is thus necessary to provide teachers and students with alternative possibilities. There is a pressing need to develop materials on the key concepts that are interactive, contextualised or related to life, activity based and make the teaching and learning process a more lively engagement.
The Kit Box
Over the last ten years, the HSTP Kit Box has undergone major transformations and in the process we have produced four prototypes. In the last version, in addition to all the HSTP kit material we also added certain other items to make it useful for class V to class X level experiments, whether the child is following the state syllabus, CBSE or ICSE, or wants to undertake some new experiments on her own. Some of the items that were added are – prism, concave lens, convex & concave mirrors, glass slab, etc.
The kit box is a comprehensive compilation of instruments, equipment, chemicals and miscellaneous items which are generally required for carrying out experiments by students of classes V to X in Physics, Biology and Chemistry. It also includes items that would cater to the strong inherent need in children of this age group to satisfy their curiosity and tinker with things around them. Each kit box would also have a set of the HSTP workbooks (Bal Vagyanik) of grades 6, 7 and 8th and a manual of this kit box which has detail about the use and specification of each and every material with picture. giving guidelines regarding its use. So this kit can as well be used by science clubs or other such fora. Finally the HSTP kit was developed by putting together inexpensive and commonly available materials, selected scientific equipment as well as specially fabricated items.
